Post-Modern Art Influence on Pop Culture and Societal Issues

Image
Above is an image called Marilyn Diptych , by Andy Warhol in 1962. Marilyn Diptych is made of two silver canvases then artist silkscreened a photograph of Marilyn Monroe fifty times. There is great symmetry used in this photograph. This was heavily influenced by pop culture. During this time society saw Marilyn as the most beautiful woman alive. Marilyn was a major pop icon. I have always remembered visiting the gigantic statue of Marilyn Monroe in Palm Springs.  Above is a drawing done by Andy Warhol in 1962 called Coca-Cola. Andy Warhol was interested in popular culture, marketing, and advertising. Coca-Cola spoke on behalf of Andy Warhol when the painting sold for more than $57 million. “Warhol created one of the most iconic images, both for his own body of work but also for the 20th Century,” said Brett Gorvy, chairman and international head of post-war and contemporary art at Christie’s. “He concentrated on the Coca-Cola bottle because it was, and still is, one of the most popul

Early Modern and the Great Depression

Above is an oil painting by Edward Hopper, titled,  Early Sunday Morning , completed in 1930. Edward portrays the small businesses and shops of Seventh Avenue in New York City after sunrise. Many think this painting perceives a day in The Great Depression. The streets are empty so businesses struggled to stay open. The Great Depression was the worst economic turndown in history, lasting from 1929 to 1939. Over the next few years, consumer spending and investment dropped, causing a drop in industrial work and employment as companies had to let workers go. The artist has been successful in giving the painting a gloomy mood. I feel Edward does this by the way he uses the light in this painting. This painting stands out because of the parallel lines seen in the building, barber pole, and fire hydrant. The colors used give a soft yet bold look to the painting. I feel like I can step into this painting and feel the quietness and depression surround me.  Above is a painting called Young Cor

Romantic Era

Above is a painting by Claude Monet called  Impression, Sunrise  completed in 1872. This is an oil painting of Le harbor and the sun rising in the distance. The harbor is located in Normandy, France where Monet painted this piece. Monet painted this for part of his other series of landscapes and waterscapes. The brushstrokes and texture in this painting really stood out to me the most. You don't see contoured lines or perfect brushstrokes but rather markings, which some considered this as rudimentary. This was a main characteristic of the Impressionism style. The color used for this painting is also important to mention. Monet utilizes cooler blue-grayish tones, contrasted with the orange used for the sky and the sun. Monet was able to convey light as we perceive it with color. During the time Monet finished the painting it was considered a different type of painting compared to his other works. Many think that  Sunrise  is the painting that marked the name for the Impressionist. R
